After the&nbsp;&nbsp;appearance of several kayakers transversing Chatham Strait, we are on a sharp lookout.&nbsp;&nbsp;Ptarmigan is headed back to Petersburg to unload all of their fish.&nbsp;&nbsp;With only a&nbsp;&nbsp;few King Salmon in our freezer, our sights are now set on finding a nice size halibut.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are soon joined by a group of Pacific White Sided Dolphins as they play in our bow wake.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_1447-scaled.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"781\" src=\"http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_1447-1024x781.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5110\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_1447-1024x781.jpeg 1024w, http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_1447-300x229.jpeg 300w, http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_1447-768x586.jpeg 768w, http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_1447-1536x1171.jpeg 1536w, http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_1447-2048x1562.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The large rafts of sea otters have made their way to this end of Frederick Sound. It is alarming how large the sea otter population has grown from last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_3842.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"747\" height=\"563\" src=\"http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_3842.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5111\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_3842.jpeg 747w, http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_3842-300x226.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 747px) 100vw, 747px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We anchor on a few humps in Frederick Sound at high tide and set out the halibut rigs.\u00a0\u00a0After several hours of no action, we call it a day and head to an anchorage known as Honeydew.\u00a0\u00a0This is one of our favorite anchorages in Alaska.\u00a0\u00a0There is room really for only one boat off the beautiful sandy beach.\u00a0\u00a0Luckily no other boats are in the anchorage and we soon have the anchor set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_3878-scaled.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"677\" src=\"http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_3878-1024x677.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5118\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_3878-1024x677.jpeg 1024w, http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_3878-300x198.jpeg 300w, http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_3878-768x507.jpeg 768w, http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_3878-1536x1015.jpeg 1536w, http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_3878-2048x1353.jpeg 2048w, http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_3878-105x70.jpeg 105w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While at anchor, we hang a hummingbird feeder from our side deck. It is always fun to watch these little guys once they find the feeder&nbsp;&nbsp;zoom around the boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_1438-scaled.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"861\" src=\"http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_1438-1024x861.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5112\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_1438-1024x861.jpeg 1024w, http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_1438-300x252.jpeg 300w, http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_1438-768x646.jpeg 768w, http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_1438-1536x1292.jpeg 1536w, http:\/\/www.idylltime.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_1438-2048x1722.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The rain sets in and we opt to stay put the next day in lieu of halibut fishing.\u00a0\u00a0Although,  we do always set out a fishing rod with halibut bait while at anchor.\u00a0\u00a0We have caught quite a few halibut fishing this way. The heads and tails from our King Salmon catch a few days ago make excellent bait.\u00a0\u00a0At high tide our rod starts singing.\u00a0\u00a0A halibut runs with the salmon head but never hooks up. At least we know there are halibut lurking below.\u00a0\u00a0The next high tide is 8 PM.\u00a0\u00a0We will be ready for them.  Like clockwork, the halibut returns at high tide and this time the circle hook has a grip on him.\u00a0\u00a0After about 15 minutes, we have him on the surface and Jeff harpoons him.\u00a0\u00a0He is a good size halibut. Just as we are about to relax, the halibut thrashes and our fishing line is now paying out again.\u00a0\u00a0How did that happen?  The steel leader to the harpoon line broke!\u00a0\u00a0He is now angry and wounded as he runs another 200 feet.\u00a0\u00a0After some scrambling, we find a second harpoon tip and slowly coax\u00a0\u00a0him back to the surface.
